It’s been 11 years now since I moved to the NYC area – and yet I am still regularly surprised by the ever-evolving landscape, new hide-aways and historic treasures I continue to find.. Angela reached out to me earlier in the year regarding photography as they were planning their Campbell Apartment Elopement. A quiet little bar full of the essence of an era passed, tucked away in the back of Grand Central Station, this spot is an ideal place for an elopement. Opening their doors before the public for a small ceremony, Angela and Darrell were then able to have a romantic post-celebration cocktail in this amazing space.

Our day together was beautiful – full of spring blossoms and easy conversation. We started at their hotel where and then hoped into a taxi for Central Park. Exploring The Pond area and Gapstow Bridge, we leisurely meandered over to the west side and back down to the hotel. From there we freshened up before heading to The Campbell Apartment and then off to Nougatine at Jean-Georges for a brunch.

Oddly enough, living in NYC with our roots in Michigan and Guyana, we rarely have out-of-town friends swing by. Which in part made this particular weekend so flipping special. Alainna, Andy and I go waaaaay back – as in, elementary back. Alainna quickly became one of my dearest friends in our school days, and, along with several other friends, all 3 of us rented a house together throughout college.

Many moons later, they now live in Ft. Meyeres, Florida, added Zane to their crew and have a bustling tattoo / art gallery shop – Howl Tattoo Shop. This was one of the best weekends. ever. It started out with picking them up in Newark Airport when my car decided to no longer ‘go’. And then decided to ‘go’, a crazy detour through the ghetto (welcome to NYC, guys!).. a boozy reunion evening followed by an aching day-after, a trip to the Natural History Museum, tooling about NYC, Liberty Landing Marina, enjoying the spring flowers and going from 80° and sunny to 40° and freezing, their art gallery opening (did I mention this was also a bit of a business trip for them, as well?) at the Stephen Romano Gallery in Bushwhack, late night pop-tart snacks cause we didn’t eat dinner in time and all around now-mature-parental shenanigans 🙂

And then there was meeting Zane. This is on the shortlist of highlights from our time together for me. I’ve never met a more confident, kind, thoughtful, compassionate 13-year old boy. And crazy talented. Within a day, my youngest was referring to them as his other ‘family’.. ‘where’s our other family?’, ‘what are we going to do today with our other family’. He misses his ‘other family’. I miss our ‘other family’.

Sigh. I’m now adding Florida to the top of our must-travel-to destinations.! Anyone want to get married in Florida and bring me along? Anyone??

I hope you enjoy this little personal post 🙂

On a cool day in early April, Erica and Matt brought their family and friends together for their surprise wedding. Yep. Surprise wedding! Matt cleverly invited their closest loved ones out for an evening under the guise that they would get to witness him proposing to Erica.. With a little fore-thought and pre-panning, they put together an elegant wedding with no one the wiser they were about to witness a Frankies 457 wedding in their beautiful garden and carriage house! Well, except for the immediate family and a best friend who is conveniently an amazing baker.

We started our day down by the Brooklyn Waterfront, meandered around the bridges and a little in-land to peruse the graffiti. We had such a relaxed time together – I will be forever amazed with these guys planning skills as well as their take-it-as-it-comes attitudes. Having met while traveling through South America, you can feel the bond, the soul connection and sense of adventure living in these two! I could photograph this day over and over and still find so much beauty to capture.

After our photos in DUMBO, we were whisked away to Frankies 457 in Carroll Gardens where they exchanged their ‘I Do’s’. Truly, this is the perfect spot for an intimate wedding! With a Carriage House behind the main restaurant, large glass sliding doors that open into a beautiful garden, this space was made for intimate weddings. They then danced their night away under the fairy lights and I walked away with a bag full of images that will forever remain dear to my heart.

I hope you enjoy!

I simply love a winter wedding! Jaylene and Dex traveled down from Saskatoon, Canada for their NYC City Hall Elopement! With a handful of family and friends at their side, we ventured to the Top of the Rock, City Hall and the Downtown area. Despite the chilly day, we had such a fun time touring around. There truly is never a bad time of year to elope in NYC. The City always has so much to offer – from the tallest peaks to the loving and lively vibe of City Hall.

Often times weddings begin around April for me, so when a couple is willing to brave the possible cold and wind my heart always swells a bit larger as the winter light is just so perfect with all the grey tones of the buildings. Finding a little nook in one of the municipal buildings will remain a favorite of mine – as Jaylene and Dex were simply engulfed in the beautiful light.

It was such a joy working with these two – I hope you enjoy the images!

Capturing a brief moment in this lovely little family’s story simply makes my heart smile and I’m thrilled to have captured this day. We met up for some family photography Brookdale Park with a mini session just as the light was fading. Letting the kids guide our way created for a fun exploration of a park that’s starting to feel like my own backyard.

I was reminded recently how important telling our stories is – along with basic human needs such as food, medical care, shelter.. It what makes us ‘us’, and each of us is so very unique and beautiful – making these stories invaluable.. And that makes handing over this little set of images all the more dear to me – as I’m sure these adorable kids are going to cherish these images in 40-years..!

I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!
